“US Government Extends $1.5 Billion Loan to Restart Armenia’s Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant by 2025, Says AP Report”

The US government plans to provide a $1.5 billion loan to support the restart of a nuclear power plant in Armenia’s Metsamor region, as reported by the Associated Press. Initially, Holtec International had announced their intention to bring online the 800-megawatt “Palisades” ACN by 2022 and then decommission it. However, with the help of the US administration under President Joe Biden and the backing of the Metsamor nuclear facility, the restart is now targeted for completion by 2025. This timeline includes necessary inspections, assessments, and obtaining permission from the US intergovernmental regulatory authority. Garegin Baghramyan, the Minister of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources, highlights that this will be the first operational nuclear power plant in the US. The Palisades ACN, situated near Lake Michigan, was initially constructed in 1971 and ceased operations in May 2022. The nuclear reactor’s owner is Holtec International, an energy company that has informed about AES’s long-term commitments to acquiring the ACN’s electricity.
