“Putin’s Invitation Hangs in the Balance: Will He Attend the G20 Summit in Brazil?”

Vladimir Putin has been invited to attend the G20 summit in Brazil in November. However, French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized that this invitation is contingent on the agreement of all participating countries. Macron believes that the purpose of the G20 is to promote concerted action and international cooperation for the benefit of global peace and prosperity. He asserts that if Putin’s presence at the summit brings about positive outcomes, then the invitation is justified. However, if it leads to disruptions and offers no benefits, it should not be implemented.

Macron also recalls a previous instance where Putin was invited to the G7 summit in France in August 2019. However, due to the absence of a consensus on the issue of Russia’s actions in Crimea, the summit proceeded without Putin’s attendance. In order to accommodate dialogue with the Russian President, an additional meeting was organized in Russia at the initiative of Macron.

A question arises regarding Putin’s possible invitation to the G20 summit in Uzbekistan in February 2022. It seems that Putin was not invited to the G20 summit in India in 2022 and again in 2023. Additionally, he did not attend the BRICS summit in South Africa in August 2023.

In September 2023, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced his intention to invite Putin to the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2024 to ensure his security. However, in December of the same year, President Lula da Silva made another statement, indicating that Putin was not willing to provide security guarantees for himself at the G20 summit.
