“False Claims: Azerbaijani TV Misrepresents Memorial Complex in Stepanakert as Military Corridor”

The Military Highway section in Stepanakert, which was under construction during the 44-day war in 2020, is being falsely portrayed as a “military corridor for Armenians” by the Azerbaijani Baku TV channel, according to monumentwatch.org. The organization, which monitors the cultural heritage of Artsakh, reports that the area actually consists of tunnels, secret rooms, warehouses, and a settlement within a natural cave. The reporter presents what they claim to be special documents and showcases several license plates of vehicles as evidence of civilian registration. However, in reality, this section of Stepanakert was intended to be a large memorial complex to honor the victims of the national liberation war, funded by Simon Petrosian.

The construction of the complex began in 2007 with plans to include a museum. The primary purpose was to showcase the rich history of Armenian civilization, including the Armenian Genocide and the Artsakh Liberation War. The complex was also designed to feature a large cross for religious ceremonies and intellectual gatherings, as well as a hotel and restaurant to boost tourism in Stepanakert. Unfortunately, due to the consequences of the 44-day war, the construction remained incomplete by 2019.

Given these facts, the claims made by the Azerbaijani side are baseless. The Stepanakert memorial complex served a civilian purpose and only took on military significance during the war. It is important to clarify the true nature of this project, as misrepresentations can distort the historical and cultural significance of the area.
