German Chancellor Angela Merkel emphasizes Israel’s right to self-defense and protection of civilians in regulating temporary ceasefire

The regulation of the temporary ceasefire will be possible with the provision of Israel’s right to self-defense and the protection of civilians, according to a statement released by German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the “Berlin Conference on External Conflict” in Germany.

“Israel will never live in insecurity if the ceasefire [of the hostilities] is not successful,” she said. “At the same time, Israel’s security can only be ensured if the civilians have access to shelters,” she added. Merkel emphasized that in any case, it is necessary for Israel to engage in dialogue with the civilian population in the conflict zone.

The German Chancellor also stressed that during negotiations on this issue, it is important to consider not only the interests of the two sides but also the opinions of mediators, such as “Israel’s right to self-defense” or “the humanitarian situation in Gaza.”

“But only one side or the other can be true. Only in that case, can there be peace,” said the head of German external operations. He referred to the “complex dilemma” about the participation of external actors in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
