“Prime Minister Pashinyan Announces Plan to Build New Schools in Armenia, Ensuring Education Access for All Villages”

If a school has a low number of students, typically around 15-20, the government of Armenia has stated that they will build a new school in a more convenient location. There have been cases where villagers have requested the closure of their village school. However, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan clarified that they are not closing any schools, but rather building new ones. He used the example of Yerevan, where many students have to travel 20 km to get to school. Pashinyan emphasized that while it may not be feasible for every school to be within 200 meters of students’ homes, it is also not acceptable for schools to be 20 km away. The maximum distance for schools in the regions is 10 km, and the government provides microbuses. Pashinyan stressed that the rights of village children to receive a quality education are guaranteed. Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Arayik Harutyunyan shared an example of a school representative who brought ten students and expressed the importance of socialization opportunities for children. Pashinyan humorously highlighted that even six-year-olds start to avoid going to school if there are no other activities available. These remarks were made during a government meeting on May 23.
