Armenia’s Ministry of Economy Unveils Ambitious Project to Revolutionize Waste Management and Boost Economy

The Ministry of Economy of Armenia recently presented a project aimed at enhancing waste management in the country, as reported by “Fact” newspaper. Despite previous efforts, waste management methods in Armenia are outdated and insufficient, leading to the spread of diseases among the population. The alarming increase in waste dumps, reaching 207-238 thousand tons annually, highlights the urgency of the situation.

In order to effectively address this issue, a minimum of 250 thousand waste management facilities are required nationwide. Additionally, a proper waste disposal system needs to be established in the capital city of Yerevan, where valuable waste that can be recycled for economic benefit is becoming more prevalent. Comparatively, rural areas have a lower recycling rate at 13-15 kg per capita, highlighting the need for improved waste management systems.

The project also emphasizes the potential benefits of environmentally-friendly practices, such as beekeeping and organic farming, in reducing waste and providing additional income for the population. To encourage waste collection in the provinces of Ararat, Gegharkunik, Syunik, and Tavush, the government plans to allocate 50% of the waste value (up to AMD 40,000).

Implementing these proposed programs will lead to significant improvements in waste management in the provinces mentioned, with approximately 8,000 waste management facilities and an annual production of at least 120,000 kg of high-quality honey. Additionally, unused natural resources in rural areas will be utilized, and conditions for the protection of valuable waste in the Yerevan landfill will be enhanced. The budget required for program implementation is estimated at AMD 320 million, with AMD 120 million allocated in 2024 and AMD 200 million in 2025.
