“Political groups in Armenia urge international community to address rights violations and democratic regression in open letter”

The “Hraparak” newspaper reported that last week, the political groups “Armenia” and “I Have Honor” from the National Assembly of Armenia sent a letter to the Ambassadors of the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, as well as the head of the OSCE mission in Armenia, and the offices of the EEC and ECHR in Armenia. The letter contained proposals for a meeting to discuss various issues pertaining to the country. The groups specifically raised concerns about the limitations on the right to peaceful protests, freedom of speech and assembly, judicial system reform, the use of violence during protests, and other related matters. They emphasized the violation of citizens’ and international organizations’ rights and freedoms by the authorities, expressed public dissatisfaction with the government’s actions, and criticized the continued restriction of people’s rights and freedoms.

According to reliable information, currently only the US ambassador actively participates in the discussions, inviting some members of the groups to the embassy for talks. The ambassador has refrained from expressing any biased opinions and has stated their commitment to supporting democratic development, protecting human rights, and advancing the peace process in Armenia.

The representatives of the groups have highlighted the unfair conditions for freedom of expression and the narrowing boundaries surrounding it in the country. They have expressed concerns regarding why the US supports this process. However, the ambassador acknowledges that if both Armenia and Azerbaijan agree on certain limitations, they have no choice but to abide by them.
