“Laser Technology Uncovers Ancient Irish Settlements, Revealing Secrets of Neolithic and Pre-Modern Eras”

Using laser technology, previously undiscovered archaeological sites have been revealed in rural areas of Ireland. These sites, including five ancient settlements, have been found on agricultural fields. Experts made these discoveries using lidar technology in the Wicklow Mountains of Eastern Ireland. The surveyed area dates back to the Neolithic period, around 3700 BC, as well as the medieval to pre-modern period, from 1400 AD to 800 AD. However, despite years of extensive research, little evidence of occupation during the 2000-year gap between these two periods has been found. According to research published in Antiquity, it was only recently that the dense vegetation of agricultural lands, which has preserved certain monuments, was uncovered by lidar. This technology has allowed for the creation of 3D models of structures, including stone enclosures, long rectangular earthworks, and wide-ranging earthworks that may have served ceremonial purposes.
