Government Human Rights

“Armenia hailed for allowing unrestricted operation of human rights organizations by international reports”

In 2023, various national and international human rights organizations have been operating in Armenia without restrictions imposed by the government. These organizations have been assessing and monitoring the situation of human rights and publishing their findings, according to the 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Armenia by the U.S. Department of State.

The report acknowledges that the government has consulted with civil society groups, but it highlights that their views were not taken into account when formulating government policies. For instance, on January 10, three well-known civil society organizations suspended their participation in the Civic Initiative for Strategic Reforms. They cited the former prime minister Vahagn Ghazaryan as a prerequisite for the organization’s recognition. These civil society organizations expressed concerns about the independence of the Civic Initiative and the government’s true intentions in the field of strategic reforms, as mentioned in the report by the U.S. Department of State.
