“Hidden History Unearthed: Bunkers, Trenches, and Weapons from WWII Discovered in Belgium’s Reconstruction Efforts”

Belgium’s authorities have announced the recent discovery of several bunkers, trenches, and other structures constructed by the German side during World War II. According to CBS News, these findings were made during reconstruction work following a population displacement. Among the discoveries are three fully intact underground bunkers hidden beneath riverbeds, covered in soil. Although each bunker contains at least one room, the underwater location of their entrance and exit poses a unique challenge. In addition, the excavation has uncovered two underground trenches and a section of a canal that was likely used by soldiers and fighters for movement. The excavation has also revealed various weapons, including grenades, bayonets, and other war-related items. Heyst, also known as Heist-aan-Zee, is the location where these discoveries were made. Situated in the Flemish region of Belgium, the area witnessed intense fighting during World War I and was once again occupied by German soldiers in 1942.
