Disturbing Trend: Domestic Violence Cases in Armenia Increase by 92.5% in 2023

The RA investigative committee has analyzed and summarized the trends in the occurrence of domestic violence in 2023. According to the analysis, there were 1848 registered cases of domestic violence in the previous year, which is an increase of 888 or 92.5 percent compared to the 960 cases from the previous year. The increase in domestic violence incidents involving servicemen surpassed not only the increase in domestic violence cases, but also the overall increase in reported incidents. The analysis revealed that the main reason for the rise in domestic violence incidents is the new methodology of recording incidents with physical injuries. Among the cases, there were 4 instances of homicide, 4 attempted homicides, 1 self-homicide, 6 cases of serious bodily harm, 7 cases of moderate bodily harm, 30 cases of minor bodily harm, 1 case of sexual violence, 3 cases of escape from captivity, 3 cases of sexual exploitation, 2 cases of extortion, 177 cases of physical abuse, and 105 cases of other offenses. The report also mentions that out of the 1848 cases registered in 2023, 338 were finalized with a disciplinary response and 341 were sent to court. In 2022, 122 cases were sent to court, involving 126 individuals. The court sent 257 cases, with 51 percent involving physical abuse. Additionally, 343 cases were reported with clearances. Out of the cases sent to court, one case was finalized with the withdrawal of the claim on personal grievousness, 9 cases were finalized with a not-guilty verdict due to lack of evidence, 8 cases were finalized with an arrest warrant, 149 were consolidated, and 608 were transferred to the judiciary for forensic examination. The RA investigative committee reminds citizens that committing offenses such as homicide, bodily harm, escape from captivity, and other violent acts is considered a serious crime according to the criminal code. The committee urges citizens to refrain from these actions.
