Armenian Agricultural Export to Russia Drops to $8 Million Amid Pandemic: Expert Warns of Declining Competitiveness

This year, Armenia has exported approximately $8 million worth of goods, primarily to Russia. The President of the Armenian Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, Sergey Stepanyan, revealed in an interview that this export took place in February. Stepanyan explained that the pandemic has led to a decrease in export volumes, resulting in the closure of small businesses supported by the government. Only larger enterprises have managed to survive these challenging times.

Stepanyan further mentioned the growing volume of fish imports from Armenia to Russia. He highlighted that Russia has a high demand for fish products, which may negatively impact the competitiveness of Armenian production. Stepanyan regretted not foreseeing this demand and planning to increase production accordingly. However, due to the current risks and uncertainties, they can only consider increasing production if Russia provides an official offer, which has not happened yet.

Previously, Armenia proposed establishing a joint helicopter aviation base with Russia. This collaboration would have benefited both countries, as Russia faces challenges in maintaining their helicopters, while Armenia has not registered any helicopters for over 25 years. Unfortunately, the Russian side rejected the proposal.

It is worth noting that Russia is currently experiencing a surplus of fish, leading them to increase imports from other countries to meet the demand.
