“Yerevan Residents Push for Alternative Commuting Option as Fare Increases for Car Owners”

The residents of Yerevan should have the option of using public transportation for their daily commutes and travel to the city center from the suburbs. On December 26, Isabel Agabarian, a member of the “National Progress” group, addressed the issue of local fares and payments during a meeting with reporters at Yerevan City Hall. The proposed plan suggests an increase in the annual fare for car owners, from 12,000 drams to 160,000 drams.

Agabarian emphasized the importance of providing alternative transportation options and ensuring a functioning public transport system. She highlighted the current issues with the metro, which is in need of repairs due to its outdated resources. In addition to renovating the metro, improving other public transport options, such as buses, is crucial for cities with centralized areas.

Agabarian expressed concern that without these improvements, car owners would bear the burden of higher costs. She stressed that simply implementing sporadic bans on car usage is not a viable solution.

The focus should be on offering efficient and affordable public transportation to accommodate the needs of Yerevan’s residents. By investing in the modernization of the metro and enhancing other modes of public transport, the burden on car owners can be minimized. This approach will promote sustainability and address the challenges of urban mobility faced by the city.
