Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in appointed as Director of Intelligence Services and Deputies amid concerns over National Intelligence Service (NIS) reforms

Southern Korea’s former President Moon Jae-in has accepted the appointment of the director of intelligence services and two of his deputies, according to Reuters. The presidential office did not provide any reason for the appointment, but local media reports suggest that there have been problems with the National Intelligence Service (NIS) during the previous administration’s reforms.

Kim Geun-hyeon, a former diplomat experienced in U.S. and North Korean affairs, was recalled by the NIS during Moon’s presidency, which began in May 2022. Moon has personally emphasized the importance of the positions of the intelligence directors in local appointments, according to his office. He still needs to designate the next head of the agency following consultations with the parliamentary intelligence committee.

“Director Kim worked on restructuring intelligence during the NIS’s reform period as head of intelligence diplomacy, emphasizing rebalancing the situation and creating a system of cooperation with friendly countries,” said a statement from Moon’s office.

Overall, this move appears to be a strategic decision by Moon to address any issues within the NIS and strengthen the country’s intelligence capabilities. It is noteworthy that Kim Geun-hyeon, with his experience in U.S. and North Korean affairs, is well-suited for the position and is expected to bring valuable insights to the role.

The appointment of the director of intelligence services and his deputies is an essential step in ensuring the smooth functioning of the NIS and its ability to gather accurate and timely intelligence for the nation. Moon’s emphasis on these appointments demonstrates his commitment to safeguarding national security and maintaining strong ties with friendly countries.
