“The Oldest Known Scientific Instrument in England: Celestial Sphere Heading to Auction”

According to The Telegraph, the celestial sphere is believed to be the oldest known scientific instrument in England. This mechanical device was used to calculate time with the help of the sun. The wooden quadrant, which was manufactured in 1311, is based on the zodiacal quadrant and measures about a fourth of the human forearm. Remarkably, it still retains its colorful pigment application, which was used for calibration purposes. The quadrant was purchased by a collector over 20 years ago, and it is only now being studied, revealing its significant historical value. Christie’s will be auctioning off the quadrant on December 13th, with an estimated price of 100-150,000 pounds sterling. However, it is expected to sell for a much higher amount.
