“Yerevan Mayor Proposes Weekend Vehicle Restrictions to Ensure Safety and Energy Conservation”
The safety and well-being of the residents of Yerevan have been the top priority during the short-term lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of the virus. Mayor Tigran Avinyan has proposed a solution to further ensure this by implementing restrictions on vehicle movement during weekends. The proposal was discussed in a meeting of the city’s executive body on November 6. Avinyan emphasized the importance of prompt implementation, stating, “We need to create certain opportunities for limited movement and effectively manage the situation, as strict vehicle restrictions alone may not suffice.” The primary objectives of this measure are to reduce energy consumption from public transportation, limit movement specifically on weekends, and potentially close roads during these days. Avinyan highlighted the fact that many countries have successfully addressed similar challenges by providing alternative transportation resources and implementing comparable measures in various cities worldwide.
