“US Department of Commerce Considers TikTok Registration for 2024 Presidential Elections to Reach Young Voters, Democrats Divided”

The US Department of Commerce is reportedly considering the potential of registering on the Chinese social network TikTok as a means to engage with young voters in the 2024 presidential elections. According to Axios, the Biden campaign did not directly utilize TikTok, but instead sought to connect with young voters through registered blogs and representatives of Democratic organizations. In an effort to reach this crucial demographic, several Democratic Party members have created TikTok pages in various states, including Michigan, California, and New York City. This move aims to capitalize on the popularity and influence of the platform among young voters.

Gretchen Whitmer, the Governor of Michigan, Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, and senior advisers to Cory Booker and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have all recognized the importance of being active on multiple platforms in order to engage with a wider audience. “I aim to reach everyone, no matter where they are. This is why I believe it is necessary to be present on all platforms and actively participate as part of my administration’s efforts,” stated Shayir-on, a senior adviser, in an interview with the portal.

The National Democratic Committee has shown interest in utilizing TikTok not only for voter outreach but also for potential access to personal data of account owners. However, there are differing opinions among Democrats regarding the decision to register on this social network. While some view it as an effective strategy to connect with young voters, others have concerns regarding the security and privacy implications.
