SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP Strike Historic $1 Billion Deal: Work Suspended, Wages Increased, and Streaming Participation Included

The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) announced on Thursday that it has reached a preliminary agreement with the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) in the United States. This agreement gives SAG-AFTRA members the option to suspend their work. The union committee for television and film has come to a consensus with AMPTP on this agreement, which is worth $1 billion. Starting from 00:01 on November 9th, work will be officially suspended and all shooting locations will be closed.

This agreement is a significant development for SAG-AFTRA members as it will lead to an increase in minimum wages and provide protection against the “expendable elements of the entertainment industry.” Additionally, for the first time, “streaming participation” will be included in the contract. This means that actors will have a say in the streaming of their work, ensuring fair compensation and recognition for their contributions.

The work of actors under the American Federation of Television and Film Workers, representing about 160,000 people, began on July 14th. However, the production of American television has been officially suspended due to the ongoing negotiations. These negotiations were driven by the actors’ demands for better wages, residuals, and limitations on the exploitation of their artistic creativity in the film industry.

Overall, this preliminary agreement between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP marks a significant milestone for the entertainment industry. It addresses crucial issues faced by actors and provides them with improved working conditions and greater compensation, ensuring their continued contribution to the success of the industry.
