Armenian Government Implements Temporary Ban on Imports to Ensure Food Security and Boost Domestic Production

The government has made the decision to temporarily ban several non-member countries of the EEC from importing specific types of goods from November 9th to May 9th, a duration of six months. These goods include corn, wheat, barley, sorghum, soybeans, and sunflower seeds, primarily in the agricultural sector.

The main objective behind this ban is to ensure the country’s food security and protect domestic production. It is important to note that the current production levels of these goods are not sufficient to meet the demand in the Armenian market, hence the need to evaluate import volumes.

This temporary ban will remain in effect until July 2nd, 2024, and there is a proposal to potentially extend the ban for an additional six months. However, it is crucial to mention that this import ban does not impact third countries exporting to Armenia, nor does it affect local producers in rural areas who produce these goods.

As part of the implementation of this project, the government, along with the EEC member countries, will take measures to establish mechanisms for regulating the temporary ban. These efforts aim to stabilize global prices and prevent drastic fluctuations in international markets.
