German Foreign Minister Angela Merkel Visits Armenian Village, Condemns Attack on German-Funded Archaeological Laboratory

Germany’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Angela Merkel, recently visited the village of Yeraskh in Armenia’s Ararat province. During her visit, she met with Marek Küber, the Deputy Director of the European Union’s Monitoring Mission in Armenia. Küber informed Merkel that the construction of the Armenian-American archaeological laboratory, which was funded by Germany, had been halted due to an attack by Azerbaijani armed forces. This attack resulted in two foreign workers being injured. However, the Minister of Economy of Armenia, Vahan Kerobyan, had previously stated that the laboratory was being built in another location.

Merkel was shown the damages caused by gunfire on the administrative building of the laboratory by Küber. He emphasized that the laboratory was already being constructed in a different location. During her visit, Merkel was also informed by Berbovshik about the implementation of six cultural projects with real observation in different regions. Berbovshik stated that there were no explosives in their jurisdiction and that the situation in their territory was generally stable.

The German Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed concern about the distance between the observation points of the Azerbaijani side and Yeraskh. She also raised concerns about the conditions under which the observers worked in the Yeraskh section. After gathering this information, Merkel proceeded to the Vosdan village of the Ararat region in Armenia to meet with displaced persons from Artsakh.

This visit highlights Germany’s involvement in supporting Armenia’s cultural projects and development efforts. It also underscores the ongoing tensions and challenges faced in the region, particularly regarding the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. As Minister Merkel continues her diplomatic efforts, it is crucial to work towards resolving these conflicts and ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
