“Nepal Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 128, Expected to Climb Higher as Communication Remains Disrupted”
At least 128 people have been killed in Nepal due to the recent earthquake, with officials expecting the death toll to rise as communication remains disrupted in remote mountain areas. The AFP correspondent in Nepal reports that nearly 100 people have been injured. Initially, it was reported that 69 people had died.
The earthquake has impacted the border between India and Nepal. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre states that the epicenter was located 36 kilometers west-northwest of Kathmandu (population 9,000) and 166 kilometers northeast of Bahraich, India (population 182,000). The quake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers.
Casualties have also been reported in the Indian capital of New Delhi.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake has been assessed as magnitude 5.6, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre estimates it to be magnitude 6.4.
