Armenian Minister Highlights Importance of Education for Patriotic Citizens

The Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia, Zhanna Andreasyan, emphasized the importance of patriotism in promoting the strengthening of the state and the well-being of citizens. She mentioned that the current curriculum includes a subject called “My Fatherland,” which aims to educate students about the country’s achievements. Andreasyan also acknowledged the need for improvements in the creation of textbooks, particularly regarding the controversy surrounding the inclusion of Nagorno-Karabakh in the history of Armenia. She urged for a new approach, emphasizing that history is not about absolute truth but a process of analysis and interpretation.

Speaking at a meeting with journalists on November 2, Minister Andreasyan highlighted the role of education in instilling love for the fatherland in Armenian children. She expressed her belief that through a good education system, the younger generation would be prepared to contribute effectively to the development of the country.

One of the measures taken to promote patriotism in schools is the introduction of a subject called “My Fatherland.” This subject aims to transfer knowledge about the country’s achievements and instill a sense of pride among students. Minister Andreasyan emphasized that innovative approaches are being followed, including the testing of new textbooks that will be implemented if necessary.

In response to a question regarding the textbooks on the “History of Armenia,” which had caused controversy due to the inclusion of Nagorno-Karabakh in the composition of Artsakh, the minister acknowledged the presence of technical and ideological errors. She assured that these mistakes would be rectified and taken into account for future editions of the textbooks.

Minister Andreasyan acknowledged the challenges faced in writing textbooks in Armenia. She stated that efforts were being made to pave a new path and improve the situation. However, she emphasized that achieving a perfect result overnight was not possible and emphasized the need for continued improvement and adaptation in the field of education.

Addressing the distinction between history as an exact knowledge and a scientific knowledge of history, Minister Andreasyan encouraged a perspective that acknowledges the process and analysis involved in interpreting historical events. She highlighted that history is not about absolute truth or falsehood, but rather a study that evolves over time.
