“Lawyer Exposes Flaws in Armenian Forensic System: Calls for Political Will to Prevent Torture”

The Prime Minister of the RA made it clear during a session of the NA Standing Committee on Defense that if the responsible party for the sabotage can be identified, they will not go unpunished. Lawyer Karen Alvaredyan echoed this sentiment during a discussion on the “International Day of Victims of Torture and the Irreplaceable Nature of Torture” at the “Media-Center” on June 26.

Alvaredyan pointed out that it is not the responsibility of forensic physicians to prevent and uncover crimes, which many doctors seem to be unaware of. He also highlighted the lack of surveillance cameras in all departments of forensic institutions, making it easier for acts of torture to go unnoticed. This deficiency in the forensic system, according to Alvaredyan, hampers the prevention of such incidents and the administration of justice in similar cases.

Discussing recent incidents, Alvaredyan emphasized the active role of the average command structure in suppressing crimes. He defined the term “violence” as the use of force by media representatives to cover certain incidents. While physical force may be justified in certain circumstances, he emphasized that intimidation, torture, and degradation of individuals are never acceptable. Violence should only be employed to protect individuals in danger or under a contractual agreement to change their geographical location.
