“UK on the Verge of Losing World Heritage Status: Stonehenge Proposed for ‘Endangered’ List”

The Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture (MES) has proposed that the United Kingdom be added to the “endangered world heritage” list, as announced by PA Media. The UNESCO committee of the MES has released a draft decision to include Salisbury Plain in this list, aiming to support the preservation of endangered sites and provide international assistance. This proposal stems from ongoing debates surrounding the conflict between archaeological concerns and the A303 road expansion program near Stonehenge, which compromises the integrity of the World Heritage Site. The Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site (SSWHS) organization has taken legal action by filing a lawsuit in the Green Court against Transport Minister Grant Shapps’ decision to proceed with the Stonehenge tunnel project, including the construction of two traffic lanes. According to a document from the MES, the proposed A303 project continues to pose a threat to the exceptional historical value of the site. The UNESCO committee recently convened in New Delhi from July 21st to 31st to determine whether inclusion in the “endangered world heritage” list is necessary.
