“Botulism Outbreak Spreads Rapidly in Russia as Toll Rises to 195: Restaurants Shut Down”

Russia is currently experiencing a rise in cases of botulism, with a total of 195 victims reported by the “112” hotline. All of these individuals had consumed dishes from “Локалкитчен” (Kitchen in the neighborhood) and “Гастропорт” (Gastroport) restaurants, both through home delivery and in-person dining. As a result, the sale of these dishes has been halted. The majority of affected individuals are located in Moscow, with 161 people seeking medical attention for botulism symptoms. The outbreak has also affected residents in the Moscow region, including Balashikha, Odintsovo, Khimki, Mitino, and Reutov, as well as Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan, where 14 cases have been reported.

The condition of some affected individuals has worsened, with several needing to rely on artificial lung ventilation devices (ventilators). A recent announcement revealed that 55 patients in Moscow were in severe condition, with 33 currently undergoing rehabilitation and 13 requiring artificial lung ventilation. Nizhny Novgorod also experienced a similar need for the device, resulting in 12 fatalities, while Kazan had one death. To address this concerning situation, a special committee of inquiry has been established to investigate the provision of services that fail to meet safety requirements. The inspected businesses, including “Кухня на районе,” have had their operations suspended by Rospotrebnadzor.

Based on preliminary findings, it appears that the businesses lacked the necessary documentation to demonstrate compliance with production storage deadlines, as well as water quality and hygienic standards for work surfaces. Moreover, there was a lack of understanding regarding production storage conditions and production technology at these establishments.
