“Violence and Intimidation Loom as 5 Protesters Face Detention in Baghramyan Avenue Protests”

During the protests in Baghramyan Avenue on June 12, five people were injured, according to lawyer Ruben Melikyan. He also mentioned that on June 15, all 28 individuals who had been detained were released near the courtyard of the police station. Meanwhile, the second series of detentions was televised and eight more people were taken into custody, with five of them promptly chosen for prosecution as a means of intimidation, all on charges of hooliganism. The accused are as follows: Karen Manatsakanyan – 1 month, Vachik Khachatryan – 1 month, Levon Safranyan – 2 months, Armenak Khachatryan – 2 months, and Avetik Gilavyan – 1 month. The decisions regarding the remaining three detainees, Tigran Saribekyan, Samvel Baghdasaryan, and Narek Petrosyan, will be announced on June 16. It is worth noting that these individuals were arrested because they had participated in the gathering with 28 unarmed people who were previously detained. The events during the protests in Baghramyan involved acts of vandalism. Eyewitnesses report that one person broke a plastic bottle, while another tore a February ticket. There were instances of stone throwing, beatings, and stabbings. Interestingly, the authorities have not addressed the cases of the beaten and injured police officers. Hopefully, the truth will emerge once one of these so-called ‘heroes’ is exposed.

It is important to highlight that excessive force was used by the police against the participants during the gathering on Baghramyan Avenue on June 12. Tear gas was employed, leading to numerous injuries, including a foot injury sustained by one of the NEWS.am operators. According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 101 civilians and police officers sought medical assistance as a result of the events in Baghramyan.
