“Armenia Reinforces National Security with Establishment of National Guard”

Armenia is set to establish a national guard, following discussions of the corresponding draft law at a meeting of the National Assembly on June 12. The program and regulations for the “National Guard” were presented by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Arpine Sarkisian. The aim is to replace the internal forces of the National Guard with national forces in regions where there are changes in organization. The National Guard will operate separately from the national forces and focus on maintaining internal security, with the ability to respond to military actions or emergencies. It will not directly participate in military operations like the internal forces did. The daily agenda will provide specific guidelines for the use of force, ensuring peacekeeping within the state’s limits. The head of the National Guard will be a representative of the Internal Affairs, similar to other power structures, rather than a civilian involved in internal activities. The new building will be included in the main management of public safety and will also involve high-ranking officials in international relations. The National Security Service (NSS) believes that this move will lead to the creation of a new “professional” national security service in Armenia. The service will address current military issues by adhering to international standards, utilizing modern weaponry, and having a professional staff.
