“Government aims to neuter 1 million domestic animals annually, but challenges remain: Armenian Minister of Economy”

The number of domestic animals to be neutered varies because there are significant differences in the total population of domestic animals. The Statistical Committee provides an annual report, published by the Deputy Prime Minister, which includes an approximate estimation of the number of animals to be neutered. However, these calculations are not precise. On May 30th, the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, Georg Papoyan, announced that there would be a preliminary plan presented for the neutering of domestic animals.

According to Papoyan, the initial budget for the neutering of domestic animals would be 1 million drams. The following years will see a decrease in this amount as efforts will focus on neutering the entire population, which consists of approximately 1 million animals, mostly females. As for males, the number will be around 2 million. Papoyan also mentioned plans to purchase devices that register radio frequencies in order to improve control over animal movement and migration, as well as the management of shelters and veterinary activities.

The goal is to neuter and account for 1 million domestic animals each year by 2025, with the number reducing to 700,000 by 2026. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized the importance of this plan and used recent incidents in the Tavush and Lori regions as examples. He stressed the need for thorough calculations and acknowledged potential difficulties in neutering male domestic animals, despite the success in addressing the issue with females.

Pashinyan stated, “If the program for neutering female domestic animals had been implemented, the same issue would have been solved for males. However, I am certain that there have been challenges and difficulties in this regard.”
