“Devastating Floods Leave Hundreds Displaced and Communities Struggling in Armenia’s Lori and Tavush Provinces”

Today, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the recent earthquake in Lori and Tavush provinces during a government meeting on May 30. The Minister of Territorial Administration, Suren Ghazaryan, provided an update on the situation in the affected areas. He reported that the water level in the Debed River had reached 650 cm the previous night and had dropped to 102 cm by today. This is six times higher than the normal level or an increase of 198 cm. The rescue operation has successfully evacuated 456 rescuers and saved 443 people. Presently, there are 141 individuals in Sanahin Village who are still trapped due to the rising water, but they are being provided with necessary supplies. Unfortunately, there have been four casualties and one person injured. An emergency situation has been declared in the flood-affected region.

Pashinyan also mentioned that around 20 villages have been impacted, leading to the evacuation of approximately 600 individuals. The M4 and M6 road sections have been closed as a result of the flooding. The M4 road has 10 affected areas, with five critical sections, while the M6 road has a total of 46 affected areas, including five sections where passage is not possible. Restoration of these roads will require a significant amount of time. The main rivers affected by the flooding are in the Norashen-Bagratahesh section, and the movement of vehicles and pedestrians has been temporarily suspended. The Erebuni system has arrived in Armenia, causing power outages for around 17,000 households. Currently, 600 households are still without power. Gas supply has been cut off for 19,000 customers, with 18,600 having already had it restored. The Sanahin-Sanahin bridge is completely flooded, and all residents have been evacuated. Yesterday, 30 rescuers were working in the area, and today there are 100 rescuers on duty. The village is currently submerged underwater at a depth of 1.5 meters. The Minister also mentioned that residents in the affected areas have been provided with food and drinking water. Out of the 443 residents, only 44 are currently staying in hotels, while others have found shelter with relatives or have chosen to remain near their homes.
