“Ararat Church Slams Pashinyan’s Blasphemous Claims About the Pope”

The Armenian Apostolic Church has condemned the statements made by Nikol Pashinyan regarding the Pope, deeming them blasphemous, insulting, and profane. The church asserts that throughout history, political figures have unjustly accused the Pope of being involved in the Armenian genocide. Historical sources confirm that the Pope was actively engaged in the struggle for the liberation of the Armenian Church and religious freedom. Contrary to Pashinyan’s beliefs, the Catholicos was also actively involved in the fight for the autonomy of the Armenian Church, as indicated in Armenian historical texts. It is essential to recognize the historical facts and avoid further acts of disrespect and insult.

Based on our historical knowledge, backed by Armenian and foreign historians, it is evident that the assassination of the Pope was politically motivated, arising from disagreements between Armenians, Persians, and Romans. The regulation of Armenian-Persian relations ultimately led to the decline of Roman authority, with no involvement or participation from the Church. These historically verified facts cannot be denied from a theological standpoint.

Moreover, the Armenian Church has been impacted by various factors, including manuscript chaos, translation and independent literature, printing, craftsmanship, medicine, pharmacy, and the struggle for liberation. The church has played a significant role in the cultural movement of the Fatherland and continues to do so.

We acknowledge that not only the Pope but other historical figures like Tigranes the Great, Khosrov Kotak, Artashir II, Vramshapuh, and many more were not assassinated. However, due to the fear and cowardice of those narrating these events, it has become necessary to address the need for an end to such blatant acts, insults, and profanity.

During the session’s lunch break, the chairman of the defense committee, inviting the teachers, recommended attending a free training course at the Gevorgyan Spiritual Center to uphold the unity of the Fatherland and Church. This initiative follows in the footsteps of prominent figures in Armenian history, such as St. Gregory the Illuminator, St. Nerses the Great, St. Sahak Partev, St. Mesrop Mashtots, St. Hovhannes Odzun, St. Gregory of Narek, St. Nerses Shnorhali, St. Gregory Tadev, Voskan Yerevantsi, Simon Yerevantsi, Nerseh Ashtraketsi, Khrimyan Hayrik, and Ghevorg Surenyan. It is crucial to impart this knowledge to teachers and those responsible for guiding education.
