Austria’s Foreign Affairs Chief Paves Way for Turkey’s EU Membership, Offers New Cooperation Formula with Armenia and Azerbaijan

The head of Austria’s foreign affairs, Alexander Schallenberg, who is currently on an official visit in Armenia, expressed his readiness to contribute to Turkey’s participation in the European Union. According to the Der Standard newspaper, Schallenberg stated that Turkey has been moving away from the EU both in words and actions for years. He described the EU’s engagement with Turkey as a favor. In light of this, Schallenberg proposed exploring a new constructive formula for cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, regulated by the OSCE and in collaboration with the EU, instead of Turkey’s frozen membership in the EU. Currently, Turkey has been striving to become a full member of the EU for over 15 years, with 16 negotiation chapters remaining open. The main obstacle in the negotiations remains the issue of Cyprus.
