“Former Prime Minister David Tonoyan Accused in Criminal Conspiracy Against National Security: Trial Conducted Behind Closed Doors, Public Deprived of Information”

Former Prime Minister David Tonoyan, who is currently under arrest in Armenia, has been charged with involvement in a criminal conspiracy against national security. The details of the ongoing criminal investigation related to the military coup have been kept confidential and only disclosed by lawyers Yervand Varosyan and Lusine Sahakyan.

It is also reported that attempts had been made to create fake high-value explosives near the public in order to provoke panic and destabilize the situation. However, these attempts were prevented by the actual law enforcement body.

The choice to conduct the closed-door trial version of the “closed regime” was made in order to protect the state confidential information contained in the trial documents.

In this context, a situation has arisen in which the public is deprived of the opportunity to familiarize itself with the actual legal proceedings of the coup against the nation. Many can only rely on the information provided by the former Prime Minister’s lawyers.

Now we can correctly assume that our print media’s primary goal was to represent the evidence of the coup against the former Prime Minister’s defenders, without the opportunity to inform the public about what exactly had happened and whether David Tonoyan had any grounds for his arrest.

During the process of examining the military materials, we discovered that there is no connection between the presented evidence of the coup and the committed acts of violence. This suggests that there is possibly some basis for questioning the reliability of the accusations against David Tonoyan.

Moreover, at the end of this stage of the closed-door trial, Judge Vahe Dolmazyan categorically denied the arguments of David Tonoyan’s defenders to re-examine the involvement of the former Prime Minister’s accomplices, thus leaving the issue of their condition unaddressed.

And after that, the explosives that the judge saw with his own eyes were found to be non-existent during the inspection carried out by the experts at the end of the trial. For three years now, explosives, which have been proven safe, have been in a critical condition. The demands of David Tonoyan and his defenders to examine the condition of these explosives or even their changing have been ignored by the court or the responsible bodies.

All of this reflects a political agenda within the judicial system, which is guided by Nikol Pashinyan’s administration to intimidate and mark criminals within the political establishment.

It should be noted that this is a fact, however, the reality is that it is difficult to achieve clarity only for a short period of time, and at that time, the political consequences of this trial suspension would be more significant.
