“Protest in Yerevan Turns Violent: Road Closed and Police Car Damaged by Opposition Group”

On May 13, 2024, it was reported that a protest organized by the opposition group, Victims of Oprel, took place in the Sarakyadzor district of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. The protesters barricaded a road in the area and one of them reportedly caused damage to a police car by throwing stones and kicking it. This information was released by NEWS.am, based on a statement from the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

The statement mentioned that measures are being taken to properly investigate the incident, including identifying the person involved and assessing their actions. It emphasized the need for a fair assessment of the individual’s actions and their legal consequences.

It is important to note that as of today, there are ongoing demonstrations led by Patriarch Bagrat Srbazan of the Tem Christian movement, resulting in road closures in Yerevan starting from the morning. Around 20 streets in the capital have been closed since 8:00 am, and 151 people have been detained by law enforcement authorities since 11:00 am.

Various media outlets have shared videos showing violent actions by some protesters. These include attacks on law enforcement officers and the throwing of stones into the river. Unfortunately, a journalist from one of the opera houses was injured while covering the events, and a reporter from 24news.am had their equipment damaged during the clashes.
