Armenia’s Human Rights Protection Falls Short: Concerns Raised by Prominent Politician

Armenia’s lack of effective protection of human rights was brought to attention by Arthur Khachatryan, representative of the “Armenia” group, during a discussion in the National Assembly. Khachatryan highlighted a report by Freedom House and cited the Council of Europe, pointing out that Armenia received a high score of 3.07, indicating it is not a dictatorship. However, he argued that further analysis shows a measure of 4.25, suggesting the defeat of civil society. Khachatryan also mentioned the use of force against opposition figures and the construction of a dark room near the Parliament. He questioned whether the individuals responsible for these actions had been identified.
