“Coral Reefs in Peril: Scientists Worldwide Mobilize to Preserve Marine Biodiversity”

Scientists worldwide are bracing themselves for a potential global crisis in coral reef health. In preparation, an underwater seed vault has been established on the Swiss Chöchberg Island in the Norwegian Sea. This vault aims to safeguard the coral reefs collected in marine gene banks all over the world. As part of the efforts to combat this crisis, the Arctic sanctuary in San Diego is currently freezing and preserving over 1,000 taxa as well as more than 10,000 coral cultures. Additionally, a joint initiative between France and Monaco’s aquariums and sanctuaries, known as the World Coral Conservatory, has introduced artificial coral reefs into Burgers’ Ocean, the largest living coral reef in Europe.

The artificial coral reefs in Burgers’ Ocean serve as part of a global experimental project and have been likened to Noah’s Ark in their purpose to protect and sustain coral reef species. Marine biologist Nico Clerx of Burgers’ Zoo in the Netherlands explained that this project acts as an insurance policy for coral reefs, ensuring their preservation even if they vanish from their natural habitats.

However, the biggest threat facing coral reefs in the 21st century is the effect of global warming, which is leading to rising ocean temperatures. The increase in greenhouse gases has contributed to coral bleaching, a phenomenon characterized by the loss of color in coral reefs. Since the health of coral reefs is closely tied to sea surface temperatures, reefs around the world are experiencing the detrimental effects of this warming trend.
