Education Minister Announces Overhaul of School Assessment System: Changes Coming for Students

The Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Youth Affairs, Zhan Andreasyan, revealed today that significant changes have been made to the assessment system in schools.

One of the major alterations is the implementation of a new grading scale, where students will not receive a cumulative assessment until the first semester of their 5th grade. In place of traditional assessments for 4th graders, an external assessment will be introduced. This external assessment will encompass tests in Armenian, mathematics, and “Me and My Surroundings” subjects.

The minister also explained that revisions have been made to the assessments of 9th graders. For subjects involving cognitive tests and laboratory work in schools, the tests have been modified to include tasks based on experiments. In schools without laboratories, students will be assigned at least 2 written works from the curriculum, which will serve as independent research projects.

In addition, the minister announced the combination of literary and historical assessments, meaning that children will now take a combined test.

This year, the modified assessment system will be piloted in the Tavush region for the first time.
