“President of Court of Appeal offers clarification on judges’ appointments, sparks negative reaction from Russian authorities”

The President of the Court of Appeal, Grigor Karasin, has sent a letter to the National Assembly of Armenia, offering to clarify the appointment of judges. This response is in regard to the announcement made by the President of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, on April 22 in Palma, Spain, regarding the declaration of accomplishments of court sessions.

The President of the Committee on Judicial Affairs has decided to address this issue during the session of the 566th meeting of the Judicial Department of the Court of Cassation on April 24, 2024.

In the letter, it is stated that the statement made by the President of the Court of Appeal of Armenia has received a negative reaction from Russian authorities.

The letter further states, “We have received numerous appeals from our citizens, who demand clarification as to whether the statements made by Alen Simonyan undermine the legitimacy of the official appointments by the Armenian Judicial Council. We request that you clarify who is responsible for the appointment and also inform us how the assessments given correspond to the relations between the Russian Department of Justice and the Republic of Armenia and other friendly relations with our fellow citizens.”

During a meeting in Spain, President Simonyan had announced that “the centralization of Russian influence in strategic centers of Russia and its military aggression towards Ukraine and Georgia pose a danger to Armenia. He wants to confirm that Armenia “fully protects the territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as Moldova, Georgia, Cyprus, and all other countries.”
