“Armenia Takes Charge: Decision on Customs Union Membership Rests in Country’s Hands”

Armenia’s decision on its future within the Customs Union (CU) rests solely with the country itself. Sergey Tamamyan, the head of the CU’s executive committee, highlighted the significance of external cooperation among CU member nations in preserving their individual sovereignty. The Armenian government will determine the country’s continued membership in the CU, including the potential for joining the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Tamamyan stressed the need to consider the interests and possibilities for cooperation between all involved parties, emphasizing the importance of political analysis and interpretation in finding a viable solution. CU experts caution that if Armenia chooses to withdraw, it may impact military collaboration within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO); however, existing regional security structures will continue to function, making it challenging to fully comprehend and calculate the consequences.
