Armenia’s Defense Expenditures Skyrocket to $1.33 Billion in 2023 as Neighboring Countries Amp Up Military Spending

According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Armenia’s defense expenditures have increased significantly from $795 million in 2022 to $1.33 billion in 2023. This represents an increase from 4.1% to 5.5% of their GDP. Similarly, Azerbaijan has also seen a rise in military expenditures, going from $2.991 billion to $3.561 billion, or from 3.8% to 4.6% of their GDP. Iran and Turkey have also increased their military spending, with Iran going from $6.8 billion to $10.3 billion and Turkey from $10.6 billion to $15.8 billion. These numbers highlight the growing importance of defense budgets in the region.
