Armenian Foreign Minister Denies Negotiations with Azerbaijan over Church Demarcation: Church of Surb Astvatsatsin to Remain on Armenian Territory

Armenia’s Foreign Minister, Mahir Grigoryan’s office, has denied reports of negotiations with Azerbaijan regarding the demarcation issue. They have clarified that the Armenian Church of Surb Astvatsatsin, situated in the village of Voskepar in the Tavush region, dating back to the 6th-7th centuries, has not been handed over to Azerbaijan.

The office of Mahir Grigoryan has confirmed that the conditions for demarcation between Armenia and Azerbaijan have not been met, resulting in the Armenian Church remaining within Armenian territory.

Protests have arisen amongst a group of Tavush region residents in several villages who disagreed with the demarcation agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. These protestors continued their demonstration near the Church of Voskepar on April 22. Their concerns revolve around alleged provocations aimed at creating unrest and transferring the territory to Azerbaijan. Negotiations addressing the situation are currently ongoing, and the fate of the Church of Voskepar will be determined by the outcome of the demarcation realization with Azerbaijan.
