“Authorities in Tajikistan Crack Down on Vice: Mandatory Labor for Offenders and Stricter Penalties Await”

The authorities of Tajikistan are planning to introduce mandatory work for offenders of alcohol, gambling, drug, and tobacco offenses. In order to implement this, changes and additions will need to be made to both the criminal and administrative codes. The authorities are already taking measures to identify individuals involved in promoting alcohol and internet gambling and are placing them on a special list. For the first violation, a monetary penalty of $330 is expected to be imposed, while repeat offenses may incur a fine of $660.

In 2016, the Upper Chamber of the Tajik Parliament approved changes to the country’s Criminal Code, which aim to address the issues of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Violations of these types of offenses can result in imprisonment ranging from 3 to 8 years.
