Zambia’s President Urgently Calls for International Aid as Country’s Economic Crisis Worsens

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema is calling on the international community to provide financial assistance to help the country through its severe economic difficulties. The president revealed that Zambia currently has a debt of $940 million solely for the war effort, leaving only $51 million remaining. The lack of rainfall has also contributed to the country’s economic downturn, resulting in over 6 million people in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Alongside international partners, the Zambian government is seeking support from the private sector, agricultural sector, church, and non-governmental organizations to overcome these challenges.

“This year, Zambia has faced significant economic challenges, leading to the unfortunate distinction of having the worst economy in history,” stated President Hichilema during an interview with Jacaranda FM radio station. He earnestly appealed for assistance on behalf of the Zambian government and people to overcome the economic hurdles.

The president further highlighted that the drought-induced state of emergency has been declared not only in Zambia but also in Zimbabwe and Malawi. Urgent humanitarian aid is crucial for Zambia, as the country has declared a state of emergency in February due to the devastating effect of the drought. While $51 million is available, an additional $940 million is required to provide essential support and relief.

The situation in Zambia is dire, and financial assistance from the international community, as well as various sectors within the country, is crucial for its recovery. Collaboration between governments, the private sector, agricultural industry, churches, and non-governmental organizations will be vital in helping Zambia navigate through these economic challenges.
