“Zoryan Institute Returns for Second Year to Prominent Genocide Prevention Week Event, Amplifying Efforts to Combat Systematic Abuses”

Zoryan Institute will be participating in the “Genocide Prevention Week” event for the second year in a row. The event, which will take place at the State University of Arizona (ASU) from April 15-19, 2024, aims to bring together experts, officials, activists, artists, advocates, and survivors to explore how peace can be achieved and efforts can be made to prevent and address acts of genocide and ongoing systematic abuses. As the largest event dedicated to the study and prevention of genocide in the United States, the “Genocide Prevention Week” event holds great importance.

Zoryan Institute’s participation in the event focuses on presenting Armenian historical narratives and recognizing the genocide as an insult to humanity. The theme of this year’s conference is the role of nationalism, state complicity, and continuity in genocide and prevention. By examining the role of the state in organizing and perpetuating genocidal acts, as well as the long-lasting consequences of genocide, the conference aims to delve into various fields such as sociopolitical actions, artistic expressions, cultural values, religious nationalism, and the use of technology and propaganda in justifying mass violence.

During the event, two panel discussions will be held at the Zoryan Institute. The first panel, “Transformation and Revitalization of Indigenous Cultures and Languages,” will involve experts from various fields. The panel will explore and compare the possibilities of dialogue and reconciliation between different communities. The second panel, “Genocides of the Balkans: Bosniaks, Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, Hungarians, Kurds,” will focus on the specific genocides that have occurred in the Balkans.

In addition to these panels, the Zoryan Institute will continue its educational mission by offering workshops on “Genocide Education via the Zoryan Institute Educational Program on Effective Education for Justice, Reconciliation, and Prevention.” These workshops, led by Professor Alex Alvarez, aim to provide high school students in grades 10-12 with the opportunity to learn about human rights violations and prevention through multimedia exhibits, classroom discussions, and films.

Zoryan Institute’s participation in the “Genocide Prevention Week” event for another year underscores its dedication to the study of genocide prevention and its efforts to educate and combat human rights violations. As a leading organization in genocide studies, Zoryan Institute plays a crucial role in raising awareness about genocide crimes and seeking ways to prevent them.
