Unknown Vandals Set Fire to Memorial of Armenian Genocide in France, Fueling Tensions in the Area

The completion of the memorial of the Armenian Genocide in Ramada, France, was marred by an act of vandalism, as unknown individuals set it on fire, as reported by France Bleu radio station. The incident, which took place last night, saw the monument being targeted by vandals who also left graffiti in the vicinity. In response, security measures have been reinforced in the area surrounding the memorial.

Menchei, a professor at X University, has issued a statement in support of the city’s Muslim community, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence among its residents leading up to the completion of the Armenian Genocide memorial. Furthermore, plans have been made to hold demonstrations against the memorial in November 2023.

An NGO in France has recently announced an alarming uptick in incidents of racism, xenophobia, and religious intolerance, reporting a 32% increase in such cases in 2023. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Gerald Darmanin, has also highlighted the concerning rise in attacks on Genocide memorials, recording a 30% increase compared to the previous year.
