French Parliament Passes Law Decriminalizing Endangered Species Hunting & Rural Traditions

In France, certain activities that were previously considered criminal offenses, such as cutting down trees from a forest, fishing forbidden species, hunting protected animals, or collecting rare plants from a village, are now lawful. The French parliament has passed a law aimed at ending the annual tradition of hunting and collecting rare and endangered species in rural areas by certain inhabitants who are hunting enthusiasts and former city dwellers, according to The Guardian.

The Minister of Justice, Eric Dupont-Moretti, stated in parliament last year, “Those who move to villages cannot expect the locals to change their way of life.” This law was presented in response to this sentiment.

During the most recent Hunting Convention, the head of the National Association of Hunters, Marchin, asked, “Is it possible that the animals are hunting us during the night? What should we do? Should we exterminate them? If the village is not to your liking, stay in the city, and if you go to the village, enjoy the rural life.” This question sparked a discussion during the convention.

As a result of this new law, residents living near working farms, shops, goods, or restaurants can no longer complain about unpleasant odors, such as those coming from manure, in the vicinity.
