“Dutch Woman’s Desire for Euthanasia Sparks Controversy and Raises Ethical Questions”

A 28-year-old Dutch woman named Zoraya Ter Bik is set to undergo mental health treatment next month. Her psychiatrist has declared that her condition is unlikely to improve. Zoraya resides in a small Dutch town near the German border with her partner and their two children. While she is physically healthy, she has expressed suicidal thoughts due to depression, autism, and domestic violence, as reported by Free Press.

Despite attempting to pursue a career in mental health, Zoraya was unable to complete her education due to her mental illness. Nevertheless, she remains determined to end her life. Following her demise, the euthanasia assessment committee will review Ter Bik’s case to ensure that the doctor adhered to the “strict criteria” for euthanasia. The Dutch government will officially confirm the end of her life.

Ter Bik has not been detained. Instead, her partner will keep her confined to the location in the mountains where they have chosen to live, as it is where she wishes to die. The Netherlands became the first country to legalize euthanasia in 2001. Currently, over eighty countries have implemented similar legislation. This contentious practice is also legal in ten states in the United States and across Australia.
