Armenia Reports Decrease in Asylum Seekers: Trends in 2023 Show Promising Decline

In 2023, a total of 817 individuals sought asylum in Armenia, according to Armen Ghazaryan, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs. He revealed this information during a session of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs on April 2. Ghazaryan also provided the data for previous years, stating that there were 206 asylum seekers in 2020, 260 in 2021, and a significant increase to 968 in 2022. This surge in numbers can be attributed to the military conflicts in Azerbaijan, as suggested by the head of the migration service.

“The trend started to decline in 2023, although some fluctuations may occur. Until 2022, the majority of asylum seekers came from countries in the Near East, particularly Syria, Iraq, and Egypt,” Ghazaryan added.

During the period of 2022-2023, citizens of Ukraine took the top spot as the largest group of asylum seekers in Armenia. Following closely behind were individuals from Syria and Iraq.

As for residents of India, the migration service representative mentioned that there has been no recent interest in obtaining Armenian citizenship. In the previous years, there were only one or two cases similar to this.
