Rising Soldier Deaths in Armenia: 2023 Sees 69% Increase, Explosions & Suicides Among Top Causes

During the year 2023, a total of 54 deaths were recorded among soldiers in relation to their service, according to the spokesperson of the RA Ministry of Defense. This number represents an increase of 22 or 69 percent compared to 2022, where 32 soldiers lost their lives. Out of the 54 deaths last year, the majority, 19 cases, were attributed to killings by the enemy, with 14 cases in 2022. Another 17 cases were a result of violating the rules of engagement in combat and other related instances.

There were also 7 cases of suicide reported, with 5 of them involving self-inflicted firearm injuries and 2 cases showing signs of suicide. Additionally, 3 deaths were a result of military incidents, 2 from accidents, and 1 soldier died from a bear attack and drowning. It is noteworthy that 4 soldiers passed away due to illness.

Regarding the increase in deaths last year, the chief prosecutor’s office pointed to the explosion in the village of Azat in Gegharkunik, which tragically led to the death of 15 soldiers. This incident significantly contributed to the overall rise in fatalities.
