“Journalism under Threat: A Reminder of Armenia’s Challenges and the Importance of International Standards”

I have received threats in the field of journalism. About a month ago, there was a problem involving the burning of the Armenian flag during the Artsakh war, and last year, our church was destroyed. Today, on April 1, during a meeting with journalists in the National Assembly, Vahram Bagdasaryan, Chairman of the NA Committee on Foreign Relations, highlighted that international standards are not being met when it comes to Armenian exports, as noted by our Russian partners. I would like to address this issue in two parts: first, as a government, we must improve the quality of our exported products and ensure that they meet not only the standards of traditional markets but also the standards of currently inaccessible markets with higher standards. We are currently working on this. The second aspect of the issue is political. Many people, including analysts, tend to oversimplify Armenian-Russian relations, but we must also consider the impact on our exports. We need to evaluate the situation by comparing it not only with the norms of Armenian-Russian relations but also with the norms of other countries’ relationships. This is a challenge we face in the complex global situation, and even in the worst-case scenario of regional conflicts, our economy continues to function normally. We should view this process not as conflicts, but as opportunities for comparison. For instance, Armenia is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), but we also maintain strong relationships with our Western partners and our neighboring Iran. We can actively engage in the EAEU-Iran partnership. We have positive relations with all our partners while considering the interests of our country and the Armenian people. Bagdasaryan further stated that Armenia has experienced unprecedented growth in foreign trade in recent years, and we have established all the necessary contacts within the EAEU. “I want to emphasize that as Armenia, we have the opportunity to integrate into the EAEU using minimal resources. Today, we have signed an agreement that is a step forward in EAEU integration. We have all the agreements with both EAEU member countries and our loyal partner, the Russian Federation,” he said. Based on his remarks, conflicts involving Armenia are not directly linked to other countries, especially our neighbor Russia. “We are facing serious challenges with our Western partners, whose goals are to enhance homeland security, improve the socio-economic situation of our citizens, and ensure the safety of our borders. We are determined to protect our borders and effectively carry out this process,” he stated. He also mentioned that despite external attempts to hinder our progress, we are making great efforts to overcome these obstacles. It is important to consider the interests of the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian people and not only focus on conflicts but also on cooperation. Armenia is a member of the EAEU and maintains positive relationships with both Western and Eastern partners, including our Iranian brethren. We have the potential to play a significant role in the EAEU-Iran partnership. We should evaluate all these issues not only in terms of conflicts and differences but also in terms of cooperation and comparisons between various standards,” he concluded.
