“80 Workers Still Missing in 44-Day War: Azerbaijan Faces Accusations of Denial and Lack of Justice”

The issue of missing persons from the 44-day war still remains unresolved, with approximately 80 workers still unaccounted for. Azerbaijan has adopted a denial policy, refusing to disclose any information or ensure justice for the families affected. Speaking on April 1st, Siranush Sahakyan, the Ambassador of Armenia to the International and Comparative Law Center, highlighted this concerning situation.

Sahakyan emphasized that while political discussions surrounding the return of captured individuals from Azerbaijan to Armenia are ongoing, the primary focus should be on the humanitarian crisis at hand. The status of prisoners of war is the main subject of negotiations, with the agreement that once this issue is resolved, the mutual return of captives will also include Armenians living in Azerbaijan. Sahakyan suggested that high-ranking officials may be on the verge of repatriation, but Azerbaijan’s focus appears to be primarily political, driven by external goals and a desire to exert pressure on these individuals.

Sahakyan expressed concern that if Armenia insists on negotiations with Azerbaijan regarding the prisoners, it may give the impression that Armenia also seeks to capture individuals from Azerbaijan. The lack of resolution and transparency in this matter continues to pose significant challenges for all parties involved.
